29-JUL-2016: Checking how the old CAFE copes with changing the damage zone.
The original, c 2003, CAFE included only a single test case, with 900 FEs in the damage zone. In an attempt to make the model more flexible, e.g. denser meshes or different shapes of the damage zone, a check is made to verify the model can be used with different numbers of FE in the damage zone. The image below show the contact force along 1, the direction of motion, on the striker, CFT1, as a function of time, during the Charpy impact test. 3 damage zones were assessed - the original, with 900 FEs, and with one FE added to or removed from the damage zone. The damage zones are shown below.
The damage zone with 900 FEs:
The damage zone with 899 FEs:

Analysis was done using gfortran 6.1.0 and ifort 16.0.2 20160204. The Abaqus version was 6.14-1. The load/time traces for the 3 CAFE models at 20oC. The results match well, thus confirming that the model can be extended to other numbers of FE in the damage zone, apart from the original 900.
